Myofascial Release Q & A

What is myofascial release?

Myofascial release is a hands-on therapeutic treatment, like massage, that focuses on the tough membranes that support and connect your muscles (myofascial tissues). Myofascial pain syndrome involves persistent tightness and sensitivity in these tissues, often in specific areas called trigger points. Myofascial release is sometimes called myofascial trigger point therapy.

The goal of myofascial release is to ease the tension and tightness in trigger points. During myofascial release therapy, your Valiant Life Medical provider manually presses on and stretches the area around a trigger point. This loosens up the tissue, which improves mobility and reduces pain in the affected area.

What conditions does myofascial release treat?

In addition to myofascial pain syndrome, the team at Valiant Life Medical uses this technique to treat many conditions, including:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Tension headaches
  • Migraine headaches
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain

Myofascial release also helps with various types of back pain, including pain and stiffness in the lower back and hips.

What should I expect from myofascial release therapy?

At your first visit, your Valiant Life Medical provider spends time discussing your specific symptoms and areas of pain. Then, they recommend the best treatment for you. They may perform myofascial release alone or in conjunction with a chiropractic session or physical therapy.

During treatment, you relax on the treatment table while your provider gently massages your myofascial tissues to assess tight or stiff areas. They use light manual pressure and stretching techniques to ease areas of muscle tension and trigger points. They repeat this process until they feel the tension fully release.

A myofascial release session typically lasts 30-50 minutes but may take longer depending on your needs. Most people find optimal relief from a myofascial release treatment every few days over the course of a few weeks or months. This varies based on the type and severity of your condition.

If hands-on therapy alone isn’t enough to relieve your trigger points, the team at Valiant Life Medical may recommend trigger point injections.
