Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a regenerative medicine component that uses healing components of your own blood. Most of your blood is a liquid (plasma), but it also contains tiny solids, including red and white blood cells and platelets.

In addition to forming blood clots, platelets play a key role in healing injuries. This is because they contain hundreds of special proteins (growth factors) that reduce inflammation and stimulate cellular regeneration.

What conditions does PRP treat?

PRP is a simple and minimally invasive treatment that comes with few side effects. The team at Valiant Life Medical uses PRP to treat a wide range of conditions that involve tissue damage, including:

  • Arthritis, including osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Chronic tendon injuries, including tennis elbow and jumper’s knee
  • Acute ligament and muscle injuries (sprains and strains)
  • Postsurgical repair after an orthopedic procedure

Research suggests that PRP is especially effective at treating osteoarthritis of the knee, but individual results may vary.

What happens during a PRP procedure?

First, your Valiant Life Medical doctor carefully reviews your symptoms and medical history and performs a physical exam to make sure you’re a good candidate for PRP. They may recommend more conservative treatments first, including physical therapy and joint injections.

The procedure takes place right in the office at Valiant Life Medical. Your doctor draws a small vial of your blood and processes it to increase the concentration of platelets. This results in PRP, which contains 5-10 times more healing growth factors than normal blood.

Then, your doctor injects the PRP into the injured area. They may use ultrasound to guide the injection to the precise location of tissue damage.

What should I expect after a PRP procedure?

You can resume normal activities the same day as your PRP injection, but your Valiant Life Medical doctor may recommend resting the area for a period of time. Some people notice reduced pain and symptoms right away, but optimal results usually take several weeks or months.

If you think PRP therapy for joint pain is right for you, call Valiant Life Medical, or book an appointment online today.
